Learn More About EA

This Westchester Chapter of Effective Altruism exists to help you learn the guiding principles of EA and how to use this understanding to help people around the world. If you would like to learn more about the philosophy of effective altruism or to connect with like minded individuals, come to one of our events in Westchester, NY. Our upcoming events can be found here on the website, on the EA Westchester Facebook page, or on our Meetup group.

If an NYC event is more convenient for you, check out EffectiveAltruism.NYC. If neither location works, find one that does; there are chapters of Effective Altruism around the world.

If you would like to learn more online, Peter Singer's TED talk and this introduction to effective altruism are great ways to farmiliarize yourself with our philosophy.

One way to make an immediate impact is to donate to effective charities. GiveWell is a non-profit organization that rigorously investigates charities to help us decide how to allocate our resources. They evaluate charities based on the impact that future, not past, donations will have.

Another option is to donate to Effective Altruism Funds. You will be able to allocate your donation across the following four categories: Global Health and Development, Animal Welfare, Long-Term Future, and Building the Effective Altruism Community. Experts in the categories you choose use your donation to effect the greatest positive impact in those areas. Though many are hesitant to put their donations in someone else's hands, I highly recommend this option because experts, whose jobs are to find the most effective places to give money, can often make a more informed and effective decision.

Spread the Philosophy

Sharing the idea of effective altruism with family, friends, or anyone you know is one of the easiest ways to make a substantial impact. Getting others to donate more effectively is as important as doing so yourself; it's why Effective Altruism Westchester exists!
